About half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, Pew Research Center found in a survey published June 17, 2026. But a study of 101,574 websites found that AI platforms sent just 0.32% of all web traffic in 2026, and Google sent 134 times more visitors. For a business deciding what to pay an agency for, both numbers matter.

How many Americans use AI chatbots

Pew surveyed 5,119 U.S. adults from February 17 to 23, 2026 Pew Research Center . It found that 49% use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024. Some 24% use them daily, including 12% who use them several times a day. Pew notes that its 2024 question went only to adults who had heard at least a little about chatbots.

Search is one of the top uses. Some 42% of adults say they use chatbots to search for information. Among employed adults, 38% use them for tasks at work. Smaller shares use them for fun (25%), medical advice (20%) and news (13%).

ChatGPT leads by a wide margin. Among U.S. adults, 44% have used ChatGPT, 24% Gemini, 17% Copilot, 14% Meta AI, 8% Grok and 6% Claude Pew Research Center .

Age matters. Adults under 50 are about twice as likely as those 50 and older to use ChatGPT, at 57% against 28%. A business whose customers skew older can expect fewer of them to use it.

Pew found one more habit worth noting. Six in ten adults say they read the AI summaries at the top of search results. Three in ten say they do not, and 10% are unsure.

How much traffic AI platforms send

Website data tells a different story. SE Ranking studied Google Analytics data from 101,574 websites from January 2025 through April 2026 SE Ranking .

Measure 2024 2025 2026
AI platforms’ share of all website traffic 0.02% 0.24% 0.32%

Organic search made up 42.75% of all traffic in 2026. Google sent 134 times more visitors than AI platforms. AI traffic grew fast from a tiny base, but it is still small next to search. SE Ranking puts the U.S. figure at 0.29% of total website traffic.

Within AI traffic, one platform dominates SE Ranking :

Platform Share of AI referrals, 2026 Change from 2025
ChatGPT 74.78% Up 27%
Gemini 11.56% Up 231%
Perplexity 7.23% Down slightly
Copilot 3.51% Up about 31%
Claude 2.62% Up 320%

ChatGPT’s share of AI referrals fell from 79.74% in 2025, even as its traffic grew 27%. Gemini and Claude grew far faster.

Visitors from AI platforms stayed longer in SE Ranking’s data. From January to April 2025, they spent 67.7% more time on sites than visitors from organic search. The median AI visit lasted 2 minutes 24 seconds, against 1 minute 53 seconds for organic search. SE Ranking says its results show patterns in its own dataset, not every website or industry. The company sells SEO software, and its sample covers only sites that use Google Analytics.

Why chatbot use and chatbot traffic do not match

A chatbot can answer a question without sending anyone to a website. A customer can read an AI answer, then call a business or walk into a store. Referral data cannot see that visit.

Google’s own AI summaries add to the effect. In Pew’s March 2025 browsing study, users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared Pew Research Center . They clicked one in 15% of visits without a summary. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in 1% of visits.

So AI answers reach far more people than referral numbers show. For now, Google still sends far more of the visits. Our report on four studies of AI Overviews and clicks covers that effect in detail.

No. Both trends point up. Pew’s count of chatbot users rose from 33% of adults in 2024 to 49% in 2026. SE Ranking found that traffic from AI search engines grew 16-fold over the same span SE Ranking .

But growth from a small base is still small. With AI sending well under 1% of visits in SE Ranking’s data, AI search work fits a test budget for most businesses, not a main channel. The right size depends on what the test shows in your own data. A business that sells to younger buyers, or that fields many research questions before a sale, has more reason to test early.

What this means if you pay for AI search work

Customers ask chatbots questions, but Google still sends far more visits than any chatbot. That gap belongs in any search budget.

Ask any agency selling AI search work to show AI referral traffic in your own analytics, before and after the work. Compare the visits and leads it sends with what you pay for it. A fee that grows faster than the traffic is a warning.

Set the baseline first. Before the work starts, record a month of visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, and the leads those visits brought. Without that record, no one can show what the work changed.

Google gives you a second measure. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode Google Search Central . Google says it reached all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026.
